The Biggest!

Our daytrip today took us back to US Highway 101, which runs north and south through some absolutely stunning countryside.

Passing through the wide spot in the road known as Humptulips, we ran north to Lake Quinalt and the resort village of Quinalt. Sidebar: Humptulips is home to 236 souls, and carries the name of a band of Native Americans from the Chehalis tribe. Humptulips means “hard to pole” in native language, referring to the difficulty poling canoes on the Humptulips river. Prep for a quiz later…

Our destination was The Worlds Largest Sitka Spruce tree. Yeah, I know. Who else would drive 40 miles to look at a tree? Well, it’s a special tree:

A comfortable gravel path, about 1/3 mile long wound through a perfect rainforest.

And, finally, The Tree!

It’s a big one!

Back heading north on 101, we made it through holiday traffic to our second destination. Uh, The World’s Biggest Cedar Tree. There’s a pattern here somewhere.

The path took us deep into the rainforest with its twisted and gnarled trees.

The Tree!

Awesome plants growing out of a 100 year old tree stump!

Lightening takes out large trees like matchsticks.

The variety of plants and vines is astounding!

We’ve never seen this type of moss before!

Sasha and Donna were happy to be going back to the truck!

Donna packed a picnic lunch, so we found a spot just off the highway to watch the ocean and enjoy the view. We may not make it back to the ocean for awhile, so we wanted to soak it up!
