A One Nighter: Washington, Pennsylvania

Leaving eastern Pennsylvania, we turned a psychological corner and began the journey west toward home. We ended up on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a toll road, passing through towns like Napier, Somerset, and California. We sailed right by Lover, PA, but slowed down when we saw the opportunity to go to Monongahela. Interstate 76 passes through four long tunnels as it works its way west through the Appalachians.

Southeast of Pittsburg, we came near Frank Lloyd Wrights Falling Water design,  his Overnight home, and a bit farther south, his Kentuck Knob creation. If only we had the time…!

We’ve managed to put 288 miles behind us today, and have slipped into Whispering Pines Campground in Washington, Pennsylvania.

This campground is prettier rustic, but we seem to have scored the easiest and longest site available. The weather forecast was for heavy rain and thunderstorms, so we hooked up what utilities we needed and hunkered down. For once, the forecast was correct! Two and a half hours of purple and pink lightning with heavy rain that knocked out our tv reception kept us on edge, but the storm moved east, and left us with a muddy site to climb out of tomorrow. We’re just about done with thunderstorms! Every few days since Oklahoma City in April… Enough already!
