Missoula treated us well, and Jim and Marys was one of the prettiest rv parks that we’ve ever had the pleasure of staying at! But we must move on. Our next stop, Post Falls, Idaho, is just a few miles west of the famously awesome town of Couer d’Alene, home of car shows, world class fishing, and incredible views.
William Tecumseh Sherman established a series of forts throughout the region after the defeat of George Armstrong Custer at the battle of Little Big Horn. Not aware that Couer d’Alene was the name of a local indian tribe, he established Fort Couer d’Alene on the northern shore of a lake he called Lake Couer d’Alene. In the 1880’s, the discovery of gold and valuable minerals prompted the railroad to come to CDA as it’s sometimes called, and the rest is history. Lake CDA is 25 miles long and 10 to 30 miles wide, making it one of the largest lakes in the western US.
Post Falls was a little known stepsister for many years, only claiming to be home to an 1880’s fort, at the time a comfortable days ride from fort Couer d’Alene. In the 1990’s, immigrants from California moved in and the town area and population exploded. Some say good, some do not, but the fact of the matter is that CDA and Post Falls are, in reality, one big city.
The first hundred miled of our journey took us through some incredible terrain, rolling, forested , and beautiful.
The highway generally followed the Clark Fork river west, with many rafters, paddle boarders, and fishermen.
