We spent the day prepping for a move tomorrow. We've just about seen every cactus in a 5 mile radius, so it's time to move on, but as we were walking the campground perimeter trail today, we spotted this guy:
Quite a head of hair, eh? This plant is about 24" tall and 10" around, so he's just a young one. Not all of the Barrel cactus in the area are producing fruit, so the conditions must be just perfect where this one is growing. There has been quite a bit of rain in the area over the last few weeks, so I'm sure that helps.
One of the things we did this morning was to drive 5 miles to the "town" of Lukesville. There is a Post Office there, and of course the border crossing, but we expected a bit more civilization. We did spot this sign at the entrance to an abandoned RV park:
Evidently the elderly owner died and left the entire park, motel, and restaurant without an owner. There are some rv's onsite, but they also appear to be abandoned. Weird. There are a half dozen orange trees with fruit dropping to the ground, so we stopped and picked a few for our smoothie tomorrow morning as we depart for our next stop.
We're loving the Cactus pictures, especially the barrel cactus. The desert pictures look like heaven to us desert rats. Thank you for sharing your travels with us. You have opened up some travel idea's for us when we retire, again. Enjoy your next stop.
