Leaving Greenfield, IN, on Thursday morning, we charged due north 146 miles to Bremen, IN. Bremen is just a few miles west of Nappanee, IN, where Nessie was born. We needed a place to stay for the Labor Day weekend, and were able to find a space in Pla-Mor Campground. Our secondary reason was to scope out the new years' models of Newmar motorhomes and eat at some Amish restaurants! Gotta tell you, these Amish people know how to cook!
When we arrived, we were given a choice of campsites, some were not level, some were in the mud, but after moving several times, we settled into an area that left us with a couple of nice sites and not too many neighbors. On Friday, Donna and I spent most of mid-day at the Newmar store, oohing and ahhing at new stuff.
Roger and Mary went to Notre Dame in South Bend to visit, because Roger is a huge ND football fan. They joined a small crowd of 30,000 or so for pre-game activities, since Saturday is the first game of the new season.
When we returned to Pla-Mor, we noticed that a few more people had decided to join us for the holiday weekend!
Golf carts seem to be the required mode of transportation here, cruising around endlessly in mind-bending loops. R and M and D and I lit up a campfire and watched the show.
Today, Saturday, we took a short drive around the Nappanee area; driving north 6 miles to the Wakarusa Dime Store which is a huge candy store and a place to get everything from jumbo jelly beans to Abba-Zabba candy bars! After a semi-minor purchase (!), we went to the Rise-n-Roll bakery for breakfast rolls (tomorrow!). A trip to Millers Apple Orchards got us some fruit, then it was off to Coppes Commons, a repurposed Hoosier Cabinet manufacturing building. Converted into a number of Amish oriented stores, one of which is a sandwich shop that serves sandwiches on the sweetest fresh bread imaginable, the building is fascinating since it has kept the old timber building framework and added modern conveniences.
Coincidently, just across the aisle from the sandwich shop is the ice cream shop! Called Rocket Science, the gimmick is that they mix liquid ingredients to your order and then freeze it with liquid nitrogen in a cloud of white fog! And it was great ice cream!
We took the long way home and dropped by Rentown Store, another Amish themed store way out in the cornfields that sells cheeses and dry food in large quantity containers. We almost bought 50 lbs of sugar, 100 lbs of flour, and a sack of rolled oats for Donna's new cooking hobby (!!!!) Not. But we did obtain some frozen mushrooms and some cheese, so all was not lost!
Saturday night was the big golf cart parade! Thirty five carts were decorated and participated in the cruise, whooping and hollering and having a great time! They had a large audience, including ourselves, choking and coughing from the dust they raised.
It's been a great adventure here at Pla-Mor, watching the kids play themselves into bed, and seeing their parents gather at the campfire to have some "adult time". As busy as the campground has been, and crazy with kids running through our campsite (and adults also), it is still gratifying to see All-American families spending quality time together! In "fly-over country", America is still great!
