Salina, KS, 236 Miles East

Look back at the last few days. Take any one of the photos that show the wide expanses of farm and ranch land we've crossed in Kansas and put a four lane divided Interstate highway smack in the middle of it. Then you'll have an idea of what we saw today as we left Goodland and sailed east on I 70. Thirty six miles east of Goodland we stopped for fuel in Colby, Kansas, because we heard that fuel is becoming scarce in the southeast.

A colony was established by P.B. Plumb along the Saline River in 1856. Salina was founded in 1858 to support agriculture in the area of north central Kansas. Salina is located in one of the world's largest wheat-producing area and the grain elevators along the multiple railroad tracks.

We took a short drive into town from the Salina KOA located some 100 yards north of I 70. We headed south on North Old Highway 81 until we got to Iron Avenue, where we turned left, east. Salina is a large city by midwest standards, with some 48,000 people living here. Most all the major shopping names have a presence here, including restaurants and retail shops, and agricultural manufacturing and retail companies. Philips, Exide, and UPS Telecom all have manufacturing facilities or headquarters here.

It's Middle America!

Going back north on Ohio Street, we passed a neighborhood bar that may be a bit out of touch with todays thinking...

Astonishingly, every parking place was occupied....

We'll explore more tomorrow.
