Headwaters

Bill and Linda and Donna and I took a leisurely afternoon drive to Itasca State Park, just south of Bemidji, Minnesota.  The road took us through open farm country and rolling hills much as we've come to see throughout the upper Midwest. The area was explored and mapped in the 1830's by men who were driven to find the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

Itasca Lake in Itasca State Park is the place.

As you can see, it's a very popular place.  The mystic surrounding such a tremendous river draws people from all over the world. Walking through the parking lot, we saw license plates from Canada and a lot of states in the Union.

From this little pond, starting with just a trickle of water, the mighty Miss starts.

Of course there are several places to cross the Miss on foot, so we had to try it:

We decided to take a drive around the area on a one-way road called the Wilderness Trail which took us through various wildlife habitats.  One of the places we stopped was Mary Lake, where we saw two otters swimming and cavorting in the distance.

All in all, a lovely day with family, exploring new places and seeing new sights!
