July 1st is Canada Day in North America's largest country, celebrating the date when the last remaining provinces were integrated into the country that we now know. Today celebrates the 150th anniversary of that event.
The hustle and bustle of life is nowhere to be found at Canyon Alpine RV Park, and life here is about as close to camping as Donna and I have been in years, and it's quiet and serene among the trees. Except for the group up the hill with the Pit Bull that attacked Sasha this morning! A young fellow, maybe 8 or 10 was walking the dog. On a leash. When they approached us as we were talking to the neighbors, the Pit Bull attacked. The young fellow didn't have the strength to resist, so I grabbed his leash and pulled the dog away from Sasha and told the boy to leave. Soon the boy's father approached, angry, swearing, and defensive all at the same time. With much bluster and bravado, he swore at the top of his lungs. The neighbors, nice people from Abbotsford, BC, and Donna and I just let him run down and leave. Wow! A quick word to the park owners about vicious breeds, and, as far as we are concerned, the matter is closed. But it was a bummer start to another warm and wonderful day!
This evening, the park owners provided a wonderful party for park guests and local invitees. A local country band whose youngest member was 60+ entertained in two sets of songs, complete with musical jugs!
Sitting in the shade, on a lawn, with a slight breeze, made us appreciate the scenery where we are.
While dogs played on the grass (not our friend from this morning, thank goodness), the park owners, Tim and Shirley served up delicious potato salad, chili, pasta salad, and hot dogs.
Tim and Shirley's daughter is an accomplished singer and performer, having toured with a number of international music groups. After a "vacation" while she raised a son and daughter, Alyssa Nielsen is ready to get back into show business. She sand for us this afternoon, doing a number of old country songs, 70's favorites, and several new country songs. She has a wonderful voice, and we will follow her career as it does a restart. I videoed several of her songs, but, let's face it.....while the camera on an iPhone is great, the mic is horrible, so they had to be deleted. Watch (listen?) for her, though...she does have a voice, and a professional demeanor.
Here is Alyssa mugging for her daughter's camera!
Donna and I had a great time talking to other park guests, while eating great food and listening to good music. As far as I'm concerned, this was better than all the fancy stuff that went on in Ottawa today!
Happy Birthday, Canada!
