Apologies to Jim Nabors, but we pulled into Nappanee, Indiana, this afternoon about 2:30. 174 miles from Utica, Illinois. Nessie was born here, and needs a couple of things fixed, so we decided to drop in and see what they could do for us.
Number one thing we learned, is that the workers start early and quit early around here. 6:00 am is when things get fired up, and 2:30 is when the dust flies in the parking lot. The Newmar factory is huge, covering several acres at the west edge of town. They have two parking areas for customers, one has full hookups, and the other just has water and electric. We were fortunate to have talked to some people who recently were here at the factory, and they steered us in the right direction for full hookups. There was one spot left this afternoon, and so we grabbed it, hooked up the utilities, and turned on the a/c! The temp was 91 as we finished.
There were two "inconveniences" on the way into Indiana today. At exit 122 on I80, about 25 miles west of the Indiana state line, a tanker truck had rolled and squashed a car, and so traffic was stopped. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to drive 2 miles. Not good. But even worse for the two vehicles involved.
Notice the fuel receipt on the dash. We're getting quite a collection of 'em.
The other thing that was not to our liking was Hwy 30 east out of Joliet, Il. The maps show a divided highway that bypasses the Indiana Toll Road, and leads almost directly to Nappanee. Well, it is a road, and it does go east and west, and it does go near Nappanee, but forget the rest. This road was about 50 miles of 35 mph cracked concrete road through Chicago Heights (never been there? Don't bother), and about a jillion other suburbs of south Chicago whose names will never pass my lips again. You see, I was convinced that the toll road fee would be exorbitant, and that I had to avoid that at all cost. Well, I found out that the toll for the part we would have been on would have been about $6. 'Nuff said. I'm a moron.
In any case, we made it, and will talk to Customer Service and the Parts Dept tomorrow bright and early. If we're lucky, we can take care of business in a few days and move on. Not on Hwy 30, however.
