Aransas Pass, Texas

We rolled into Aransas Pass after a short 172 mile trek from South Padre Island. Arriving at 2:30 pm, we had plenty of time to explore the area. But I'm getting a bit ahead of myself.

Aransas Pass is just north of Corpus Christi, TX, one of the largest ports on the Gulf Coast. As we approached the city of better than 300,000, we could see the financial district.

Highway 44 crosses Corpus Christi Bay just north of town.

We're set up in space 413 of the Southern Oaks Luxury RV Resort. Quite a mouthful. We chose this park because it is advertised to be part of the Passport America system, which provides half-price camping at participating parks. Unfortunately, on our arrival, the staff didn't know what we were talking about when we requested the reduced rate. When presented with evidence of participation in the form of an entry in the PA Campbook, the response was "We'll check into it". Yeah. This is a nice park, with lots of grass, and concrete parking pads at each site. The roads are also concrete, so the effect is one of cleanliness throughout. Drawback? The sites are very close together. Ah, there's always something……

Heading out into Aransas Pass this afternoon, we found the only thing in the area worth taking a picture of:

This offshore drilling platform is in dry dock near the Port of Aransas. Looking much like the Space Shuttle ready for liftoff, the creature is huge. That's a helicopter landing pad just above main deck level facing us.

Considering the "wealth" of things to see and do in the immediate area, we're kinda concerned that we'll be able to fill the five days we have here. Tomorrow the car goes into the shop for service and a small warranty item, but after that we're on our own!
