Pink and Purple, White and Blue!

We were up early this morning at Tom Sawyer's RV Park because we had a long trek ahead of us. Sasha and I were out taking our walk just after sunrise and saw a beautiful cloud formation over the Mississippi River.

Our journey today took us across the breadth of Arkansas on I-40, rolling hills slowly gave way to range and farm land. I had no idea Arkansas was so pretty!

We were on the road for about 3 hours when we got to Conway, Arkansas, just a little north of Little Rock. We stopped for lunch at a Cracker Barrel restaurant and enjoyed a tremendous two hour lunch and conversation with Donna's cousins, Dwayne and Sara, who live in the area. Donna' aunt settled in the area years ago, and D has a ton of cousins in the area. Dwayne and Sara, fortunately, were able to meet us on short notice and we're very thankful!

Cruising down I-40, about half asleep from the large lunch, I was startled by a large dark shape that suddenly appeared on our left side!

Thinking I was involved with a whale of some kind, I whipped out the camera and snapped a couple photos of a truck hauling a blade for one of those huge wind turbines that are springing up across the country. What a sight!

Another few miles brought us to the Oklahoma state line. The Cherokee Nation begins at the state line and continues on in to the state, complete with gambling casinos and subsidized truck stops!

Our goal today was the Checotah KOA on Lake Eufaula. Normally we don't stay in KOA's, but this one is located about 1/2 way to our next destination, so we've decided to stop for a couple of days and catch our breath. After three one-night stops, we are ready for a break! As we began to check in this afternoon, I began to wonder if this was going to be another disappointing KOA experience when the young lady seemed unsure of having a site for our size of rv. You may know that when you request a reservation online with KOA you fill in all the pertinent info about your rig and the amenities desired, so I thought "here we go...." As it turns out, the young fellow in the golf cart that led us to our site was very helpful, and we slid into a nice, long, wide site with no trouble at all! This particular KOA has accommodations for horses and adjacent cabins, so traveling horse people stop here a lot.

We were late checking in, and so we were late setting up. Of course, a conversation with the neighbor was partly responsible, as was a lost contact lens (in the grass of course! Thank you Ms. Black for your help finding it!). A few minutes later, the skies clouded over and the lightning and thunder started with pelting rain soon following.

The lightning was primarily cloud to cloud, but was beautiful in the colors of brilliant white, sizzling blue, rose pink and deep purple. What an exciting sight for a couple of people from the west coast!

We drove 362 miles today, requiring 5.5 hours, not counting the two at lunch, so we're hitting the sack early tonight! Tomorrow we'll go see what Lake Eufaula and the town of Checotah are all about.
