Thank You to the Greatest Generation

Donna and I spent the day in the Corvallis/Junction City area waiting for a few minor repairs to be made to Nessie at the dealer where we purchased the motorhome.  We noticed a huge number of signs thanking veterans for their service.  Thinking they were left over from Memorial Day, we went about our sightseeing, visiting the Oregon State campus and downtown Corvallis, having lunch and the like.

We finally realized that today is the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landing in World War II.  We've always had a special connection to that era since our parents participated in and survived the war.

So thank you to the men and women of the services that participated 70 years ago.  We wouldn't be here without your sacrifice and we wouldn't be enjoying this wonderful, resilient country without you.

Thank You.

Highway 99S between Junction City and Corvallis takes you through some awesome farming country. The crops range from organic blueberries to hazelnuts to Fescue grass (grown for seed). We enjoyed our drive through this area, and stopped for a close look at a crop that we couldn't at first identify….

No water shortage here!

The field stretched for miles…

A quick stop and a closer look….

It's spearmint!

We snipped a leaf and had a good sniff just before the Mint Gestapo descended on us! We barely escaped with our lives!  It was almost as good as The Great Escape!  We had been parked on a side road for maybe 5 minutes when we saw a big cloud of dust and a white pickup approaching at breakneck speed.  It looked so ominous that we jumped in the car and took off on the main road just as the pickup got close.  The driver stopped and gave us the stink eye until we got out of sight.  Wow, these people take their mint seriously!

Just in case they discover where we're staying and we are held captive in Junction City, here's one last pic of Donna and the mint field:
