Bahia Honda

Meaning "Deep Waters", Bahia Honda is one of, if not the most popular state parks in the Keys. Operated as a service to the residents of Florida, it is also a huge draw for tourists. On Sunday, the 15th, we braved the crowds and went to the beach. This is also one of the last areas where remnants of Henry Flagler's railroad dreams can be seen. A short section of the famous bridge is maintained, but it is closed well short of the span.

From a beach on the "Bay Side", the bridge can be seen, complete with collapsed sections.

It's incredible to imagine that the bridge was constructed as a railroad bridge, across a very difficult "cut" between keys. Ofttimes crews were only able to work 45 minutes at a time due to currents. The Upper roadway was added to the railroad bridge at a later time when automobile traffic became popular. Imagine riding in a car on a roadway just as wide as a railroad track, high in the air over water, with a train passing underneath! No, I don't think that would be for me....

Bahia Honda has three main beach areas, and we chose one on the "ocean side". It was a beautiful day and a beautiful beach!

Yes, it was that kind of day!

Returning to Jolly Roger RV Park, we were just in time to see yet another Florida Keys sunset. This time we were joined by a local resident!

Yet again, a fishing boat crossed just as the sun was setting. Pretty cool!
