The Keys

Leaving Homestead on Tuesday morning, we traveled south eighty miles to Marathon, Florida, situated just about half way between Key Largo and Key West. Once on US 1 in Key Largo, it's only 106 miles to Key West, so we decided that stopping at mile marker 56 made sense for us to explore both north and south.

The first thing we remarked on as we crossed Shell Key, Boggy Key, Plantation Key, Lignumvitae Key on our way to Grassy Key was that "it's all about water".

The locals must add some secret ingredient to the water to impress the tourists! I can't think of any other reason for the astounding color!

Of course, since there is water, there must be boats....

The road has a rather unassuming look as it crosses the various keys, but what isn't visible is the ocean just a few yards to either side.

After setting up "camp" at Jolly Roger RV Park, site 16, we went off to explore Grassy Key, Vaca Key, and Boot Key, all islands that make up the Marathon area. Just a few miles south we stopped at the start of the Seven Mile Bridge. This is the longest of the bridges in the keys, and replaces what was once a railroad bridge that had been converted to vehicle traffic.

For several miles, the new bridge and the old, abandoned bridge parallel each other. The old bridge has been converted to a walking and biking trail, and is somewhat maintained. Old railroad rails have been used as guardrails and are rusting away as we speak, so the future of the bridge is in doubt. The old bridge is so narrow, that trucks passing would hit the mirrors on their vehicles as they passed! Remnants of the center line are still visible, and it's very easy to imagine that happening.

We returned to Nessie just before sunset, and decided that Sasha needed some exercise.

A quick trip to the Bark Park that is just a short distance down the road took care of the exercise issue! Sasha met Roxy, who is just a bit younger than S, but they got along famously! Chasing each other and playing tug on branches was their favorite things!

Sunset was a bit obscured by clouds, but from the front window of our motorhome was great! What a way to end the day!
